Welcome to St. Mary College in Nagoya, Japan. Thank you very much for visiting our homepage and I am delighted to have this opportunity to introduce our exceptional Overseas Program. My name is Joseph Pielech and I am the director of the program. I have been living and working in Japan since 2002 and all of my time in Japan has been spent at St. Mary College. In addition to being the Director of International Program, I teach a variety of courses to outstanding and highly motivated students. My recent courses include literature, religious studies, philosophy, psychology, grammar, reading and various test preparation classes for TOEFL and STEP. When I am not in the classroom, you can usually find me in a dojo! I am an avid martial artist holding dan rankings in both kendo and aikido. The martial arts have really allowed me to understand Japan and the Japanese at a deeper level and I am honored to have the opportunity to train here. Although I adore Nagoya, I find any excuse to leave the city! Whether walking the Kumano Kodo or the Saigoku Meguri or visiting many of Japan's UNESCO world heritage sites and temples, I refresh and reinvigorate myself by traveling in Japan.

St. Mary College prides itself on its excellent academic and professional reputation, and has long been dedicated to English education by offering a learning environment characterized by a diversified curriculum blending the most current language teaching pedagogies with highly educated language teaching professionals who are committed to the success of each student. What is more, St. Mary College maintains a vigorous sister-school relationships with many universities in The United States, Australia and Canada. Our Overseas Program offers our students a unique educational experience that helps them meet their academic and professional goals, be they studying abroad, continuing their education at a Japanese university or entering the international workforce. The dynamic curriculum offers each and every student an educational experience designed to help them maximize their learning opportunities and ensuring success.

Recently, I was asked by a parent of a prospective student "why should my daughter study abroad?" This is an excellent question and I truly believe that studying abroad expands one's academic, social, and spiritual development through the challenges of intercultural learning and living on one's own. The study abroad experience broadens a student's perspectives of the world and kindles a passion for global and international issues. The student who studies abroad, unequivocally, become more aware of ways you can make a difference in the world. Additionally, students who study abroad are better prepared for employment in the global economy because they have learned valuable skills by being immersed in new cultures. Employers know that studying abroad provides leadership skills in a world that is increasingly globally interconnected. The self-confidence, discipline and insight gained from studying abroad will help students for a lifetime.
